Free printable tangram PDF — pieces, 20 puzzles, answer key
Short answer. Download the PDF. Five A4 pages: a 16cm tangram square to cut into 7 pieces, 20 puzzle cards ordered from 3-piece warm-ups to full 7-piece classics, and an answer key. Free, no email address, no watermark across the puzzles.
What's in the pack
- Page 1 — the pieces. The classic square, printed at true size with cut lines. Print at 100% (skip "fit to page"), cut along every line, and you have a working tangram set. Printing in black and white? Let your child color the pieces before cutting — it's half the fun and makes the two large triangles easier to tell apart.
- Pages 2–4 — 20 puzzles. The same first 20 levels as our online tangram, as silhouette cards. The first 8 use fewer than 7 pieces — each card says how many — so a young child can win early instead of drowning in options. Why the ramp matters is covered in easy tangram puzzles for kids.
- Page 5 — answer key. Every puzzle solved, in color, piece by piece. For the parent, not the child — a solution shown is a puzzle spent.
Why paper, when the game is free online?
Different tools for different moments. Paper works where a screen doesn't: two kids on the floor solving together, a quiet table activity during a power cut, the school project that needs scissors anyway. Cutting the pieces out is also fine-motor practice that no app can replicate.
The browser version earns its place differently — pieces click in when they're placed right, so a child can keep going without an adult confirming every move, and there are 82 levels instead of 20. Most families we know end up using both: paper on the weekend, screen in the daily quiet-time slot.
A note for teachers
The pack is free for classroom use — print as many copies as you need. One template page per child, one set of puzzle cards per table works well for grades 1–2. The puzzle designs are adapted from the MIT-licensed omerkel/Tangram collection, same as our online levels.
