Path-finding puzzles for kids: draw the whole route before you move

Short answer. A path-finding puzzle gives a child a small grid, a character on one side, a goal on the other, and some obstacles in between. The child lays a connected trail of tiles from one to the other, going around the blocks. Nothing moves until the whole route exists, which is what makes it different from a maze. The distinction sounds like hair-splitting until you watch a four-year-old meet both formats in the same afternoon.

Why this is not a maze

In a maze, your child can set off first and work it out on the way. Pick a direction, take a step, find that one blocked, back up, try another. The whole maze is on screen, walls and all, so planning it in advance is perfectly possible. Nothing obliges them to, though, and in my experience most children walk before they look.

A path-finding puzzle asks for the opposite order. There is no character to steer. Your child taps tiles to build a trail, and the trail only becomes a journey once it touches the goal. Nothing is committed until the whole thing is laid out, so the question in front of them shifts from "which way now?" to "where does this end up?"

Many children show you the moment it lands. Early on they tap outward from the character more or less at random and run into a block. After a few of those, their eyes start going to the goal first and working backwards.

Find the Way has no character to steer at all; you tap tiles and the route appears behind them. Maze Runner gives you Bunny, moving one cell at a time by swipe, or by arrow key on a computer, so a child can commit to one step without committing to a plan. Same spatial skill, approached from opposite ends. We built them that way deliberately.

The old puzzle underneath

Drawing a path between two points on a grid is not a mechanic somebody invented for a phone.

A version of it ran in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle in 1897, in a column by the American puzzle-maker Sam Loyd. Twenty years later Henry Ernest Dudeney printed a close relative in Amusements in Mathematics (1917) as "a puzzle for motorists", puzzle number 252, which tells you what people thought it was about. The form was later popularised in Japan by the publisher Nikoli, under the names Arukone and Nanbarinku. Most people today have met its descendant as a phone game with coloured pipes. The family name is Numberlink.

The classic version is harder than ours: several pairs of endpoints at once, with lines that must not cross or branch. We use one pair and a scatter of obstacles, because we wanted the idea to land before the constraint arrives. It is the same idea, and it has kept people occupied for well over a century.

What we built, and what it does when the route is wrong

The first three levels have no clock at all

Levels 1 to 3 are 3×3 and 4×4 grids with no countdown whatsoever. A child can sit and stare. As of August 2026, Find the Way starts its countdown at level 4, opening at a generous 60 seconds and tightening to 25 by level 10, by which point the grid is a 6×6 with the obstacles thickened.

This ordering matters more than it looks. A clock on level 1 would teach a child to guess quickly, which is the exact habit the puzzle exists to replace.

Tapping backwards is the interesting part

When a trail runs into a dead end in Find the Way, tapping any tile already in the trail rubs out that tile along with everything laid down after it. The child picks up from whatever is left, so undoing one bad turn costs one tap.

I originally wanted a wrong turn to reset the board, on the grounds that it left fewer states to reason about. I was wrong, and the reason is that the interesting moment in this game is what a child does when they realise they are stuck. Some trim back three tiles and re-route. Some hit Clear and start from scratch. Trimming is the more advanced move, because it means they have worked out which part of their plan was wrong instead of discarding all of it, and it is worth noticing out loud the first time it happens.

Running out of time never costs a level

If the countdown expires, a soft amber "Almost! Try again." appears and the same level rebuilds with a fresh obstacle layout. The level number does not go down. Progress is saved on the device, so a child can leave mid-climb and come back to exactly where they were.

As of August 2026, Find the Way ships ten levels, 3×3 up to 6×6, and every layout is tested for a working route before it reaches the screen.

The thing that actually helps a stuck child

When my nephew stalls on a level, my hand goes straight to the screen to point at the right tile. It works, in the sense that the stalling stops. That is about all it does.

There is a better move, and it comes out of research on how young children learn routes. In a 2015 study in Frontiers in Psychology, Lingwood and colleagues took 40 children aged five through routes in a virtual environment. Twenty of them heard an experimenter name the landmarks out loud at each junction; twenty did not. Across all forty, the narrated children went wrong at roughly a third the rate of the others when retracing the route. Among those who got the route down cold, the narrated group needed an average of 0.89 further attempts against 2.21. (open-access paper)

The transferable part is the naming. So when your child is stuck, try describing the board instead of solving it: "there's a rock next to the tree, can your path get past on the other side?" That hands them language for the obstacle, which is usually most of what they were missing.

If they are still stuck, ask which tile touches the goal. Working backwards one step is normally enough.

When to leave it alone

  • Under 4 is usually early. The 3×3 levels are tappable at three, but in my experience the planning idea mostly does not land yet.
  • Not when they are already frustrated by something else. This puzzle asks a child to slow down, which is usually the hardest thing to ask of a frustrated child.
  • Not as a race between siblings. The timer from level 4 is enough pressure on its own.

Common questions

What age are path-finding puzzles for?

Find the Way on epotli.com is built for ages 4 to 8. The first three levels are small and untimed so a four-year-old can learn the idea, and by level 10 the 6×6 grid with a 25-second clock is a real challenge for a seven- or eight-year-old. No reading is needed to play.

Is a path-finding puzzle the same as a maze?

No. A maze can be walked one step at a time, so a wrong turn is usually discovered by taking it, even though the walls are visible from the start. A path-finding puzzle has to be laid out completely before anything happens, which rewards spotting the wrong turn before you tap it. In my experience the maze is the easier one to start with.

My child just taps randomly. Is it doing anything?

Early on, tapping around is the learning: they are working out which tiles count as next to which. Watch for the moment they pause before the first tap. That pause is the skill arriving, and it often shows up around the levels where the grid stops fitting in one glance.

Does it need an install or an account?

No. Find the Way runs in a browser at epotli.com on a phone, tablet or computer, with no sign-up and no ads. Nothing your child does inside the game, including the routes they draw and the levels they reach, leaves their browser. Where to start

Open Find the Way and hand over the phone. Level 1 is a 3×3 with a single obstacle and no clock, and most children work out the tapping without being told.

When they have finished the ten levels, Maze Runner asks the same spatial question from the walking side, growing from 3×3 to a dense 10×10. One Line is the strictest member of the family: trace an entire shape in one unbroken stroke, no lifting, where a bad first move can trap you twenty lines later. If your child trims a wrong turn back instead of hitting Clear, say you noticed. That is the move worth naming out loud.
