Maths Practice — it shows you every step when you slip
Maths Practice is now live. It is for older kids than the rest of epotli, classes 4 to 8, and it is built around one idea: the useful moment in maths practice is not getting it right, it is what happens when you get it wrong.
Most practice apps handle a wrong answer by showing the correct number and moving on. Your child learns that they missed it. They do not learn why. So this one works through the whole calculation instead:
12 + 3 × (4 − 1)
Brackets first 4 − 1 = 3 12 + 3 × 3
Multiply next 3 × 3 = 9 12 + 9
Add last 12 + 9 = 21 21
Before that reveal, it asks "which part do we do first?" and lets the child tap the piece they think comes first. Finding the step yourself sticks better than reading someone else's working.
You type the answer. There is no multiple choice anywhere in this section. Four options mean a child who has no idea still has a one-in-four chance, and a lucky guess looks exactly like understanding. Typing also means we can tell which mistake was made: if the answer to 7 + 3 × 4 comes back as 40, that is not a random slip, that is working left to right. The practice that follows targets that specific habit.
Get one wrong and you get more of that kind. Every miss adds two more questions to the session, drawn from the same rung and aimed at the same misunderstanding. Sessions start at 20 questions and grow when they need to. That is the point of practice.
There is no timer. Not a single countdown in the whole section. A clock is a reasonable thing to put on a reflex game and a bad thing to put in front of a child who is already nervous about maths.
What is in it at launch:
- Tables — 2 to 12, then missing factors and division facts
- Basic Computation — carrying, borrowing, remainders, decimals
- Mixed Operations — several operations where order matters, no brackets yet
- BODMAS — brackets, powers, nesting, and the cases that catch everybody
Each topic is a ladder of ten rungs, and each rung exists to fix a specific error rather than to be generically harder. 18 − 7 + 4 is its own rung because so many children read it as addition-before-subtraction and answer 7. −2² and (−2)² get their own rung because they look identical and are not. Questions are generated fresh every time, so a repeat attempt is a genuinely new set rather than the same worksheet again.
Difficulty follows the class, not just the level. A class 5 question stays with whole numbers. Class 7 brings in negatives inside multiplication and division, and decimals. Powers wait for class 8. That mapping follows the new NCERT Ganita Prakash books, where order of operations is a class 7 topic and exponents arrive in class 8. One note on the name. NCERT's own textbooks teach the order of operations without ever printing the word "BODMAS" — the acronym comes from teachers and exam guides rather than the syllabus. We use it here because it is what people search for and what most Indian children are taught to say, but the practice itself follows how the textbook actually explains it.
For parents, there is a progress page behind a simple gate. It does not show a percentage. It tells you what your child has solid, what they keep getting caught by, and what they have not met yet, in words like "keeps missing the sign flip through brackets". That is the thing you can actually sit down and explain over ten minutes.
